"Not My Style”, Tim De Cotta’s latest single feat. Mickeyleano (Mediocre Haircut Crew) talks about dating in a changed world, amidst lockdowns and mortality-checks and adjusting to the uncharted limits and stresses of a new normal.
Detailing the ever-evolving paradox of us being more alone as the world connects more rapidly and intricately than ever before, love in modern times can be so challenging with all the walls we build and the personas we promote; which, often times, are so far removed from who we really are. Yet, we still yearn instinctively for connection and love amidst everything that seems to be working against us.
The fights between our ids and egos can be louder, pushing and pulling us from what we really want, creating insecurities, misunderstandings and ultimately regret. This song is about regret not being in style, and even less so, being alone.
“Not My Style” smoothly explores this insecurity, this ego and this fear of being fully fragile while facing the possibility of being rejected; in the backdrop of a banging boom-bap track and silky vocals from Mickeyleano and Tim De Cotta.
We travel through stages of hot-and-cold and hard-and-easy-to-get through the verses, with both crooners battling confusion in the perspective of their egos, not knowing if the love they chase is going to ever reciprocate. These accounts are then exposed by the vulnerability of the lyric in the chorus, with its fragility; “I don’t want to be alone, ‘cos that’s just not my style”.
Mickeyleano then shines and elevates the bridge to a romantic profession of love and doubtful self-realisation simultaneously, resolving ironically, in more insecurity-borne confusion!
